2011 Jim Hanna Memorial Scholarship Offered

As a director for Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska (ICON), Jim Hanna worked tirelessly to further the causes he believed in. One of those causes was ICON. Hanna wrote policy, attended legislative hearings, testified on issues important to Nebraska’s cattle industry, co-chaired the annual convention, and was an inspiration to the board and to all who knew him. He felt that one man could make a difference and that it was every man’s duty to step up and be involved. Hanna had said, “Those who say it cannot be done should not bother the man who is doing it.”

Hanna always insisted that the information which ICON put out was truthful and correct; there wasn’t any room for spinning the facts. He was always willing to give of his time and resources. He would stay with the job at hand until it was finished. He was a friend to all the members of ICON and guided the Nebraska cattle producers with his quiet leadership and innate intelligence. His passing has left a hole in ICON which is not easily filled.

With these characteristics in mind, ICON has established the Jim Hanna Scholarship Fund. It is a $500 scholarship in Hanna’s memory, open to the child of any ICON member who plans to attend college in the fall of 2011. The recipient is allowed to attend any school in any major of their choice. The student must maintain a 2.5 grade point average and be involved in extracurricular activities. An essay on their goals must accompany the Scholarship application by Friday, April 30. The funds will be distributed after the student registers and begins the fall semester at the college of their choice. Please remember the parents of the student must be a member of ICON.
