ICON Awards 2010 Jim Hanna Memorial Scholarship

The Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska (ICON) is proud to announce the recipient of the 2010 Jim Hanna Memorial Scholarship: Megan Hanna of Thedford, NE.

As a director for ICON, Jim Hanna worked tirelessly to further the causes he believed in, including his commitment to ICON. Hanna wrote policy, attended legislative hearings, testified on issues important to Nebraska's cattle industry, co-chaired the annual convention, and served as an inspiration to the board and all who knew him. He believed one person could make a difference and that it was every individual’s duty to step up and get involved. His passing left a void in ICON that is not easily filled.

This year, ICON proudly awards the scholarship to Jim's daughter, Megan Hanna. Megan graduated as valedictorian of her senior class at Thedford High School and plans to attend Doane College. While undecided about her exact career path, she has expressed interest in pre-med and psychology.

ICON is also reminding Nebraska cattlemen about the upcoming USDA/DOJ Workshop in Fort Collins, CO, on August 27, 2010. ICON is sponsoring a bus trip to the event, with free transportation provided thanks to ICON and several sponsors. The deadline to sign up for the tour is August 6. A block of 20 rooms has been reserved at the Best Western University Inn, located directly across the street from Colorado State University, where the workshop will take place. The rate for accommodations is $79 for two double beds.

"Producers showing up in large numbers at the workshop will send a clear message to our government that there is a problem with the current market practices and it needs to be fixed," said ICON Executive Director Destry Brown. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We must make whatever sacrifices are necessary to attend this workshop, as the future of our industry depends on our participation."

For more information about rooms or to reserve your seat on the bus, please contact Destry Brown at 308-458-2244.
