ICON Members Hold Annual Convention
During one of the busiest seasons for Nebraska cattlemen, the Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska (ICON) took time away from cattle roundups, weaning, branding, and vaccinations to hold their annual convention in early November.
The day-long event at Valentine High School included discussions on topics such as state legislation, animal health and ID issues, carbon credits and wind energy, checkoff reform, and property rights.
“If we don’t take time to do this, who will?” said Louis Day, CEO of ICON and Nebraska Chairman for R-CALF USA. Day expressed satisfaction with the larger attendance compared to last year’s meeting.
A major milestone for ICON was the passage of LB 632, sponsored by Senator Cap Dierks, which made the USDA’s premise or animal ID program voluntary in Nebraska. ICON worked closely with Dierks on this bill and hopes to collaborate on future legislation, including revisions to fencing laws.
The convention featured discussions with state senators, who addressed critical rural issues like small schools, water rights, and rural economic development. Senator Deb Fischer of Valentine emphasized the need to work together to improve rural economics and schools. Senator Annette Dubas highlighted renewable energy as a priority.
Guest speakers, including representatives from R-CALF USA, the Nebraska Farmers Union, and local property rights advocates, emphasized the importance of grassroots action, buying local, and understanding property contracts to protect landowner rights.
The convention concluded with the approval of eleven resolutions addressing key concerns for Nebraska cattle producers. For more information, call 308-458-7282 or visit www.independentcattlemen.com.
